Citizenship

Aberdeen College promotes good citizenship and as such encourages students in fundraising activities. We have our very own Charity Box which is run by students for students and staff where you can often pick up a bargain.  All donations are welcome and every month income raised is donated to charity. During 2008/2009, the Charity Box raised over £2,300 which went to the MS Society, Archway, Children in Need, Shelter, Barnardo’s, Invest in ME, and Save the Children to name but a few.

Almost £12,000 was raised in total by College students.  Animal Care students raised £1000 by selling calendars, raffle tickets and collections at their Christmas party. Youth and Community learners raised £1069 for Comic Relief through a talent show they held. As part of their Personal Development: Self in Society unit, Administration students organised various fundraising events including ‘Name the Panda’ and a Sponsored Walk where they raised £842.00, and fundraising concerts by music students raised £1,400.

BP Tutoring Scheme

The BP Student Tutoring Scheme provides an exceptional volunteering opportunity. For all participants, students, school pupils and classroom teachers, it provides an outstanding opportunity to share experiences, contribute expertise and enhance the school curriculum.

Students from Robert Gordon University, the University of Aberdeen and Aberdeen College successfully completed the BP Tutoring Scheme, a 14 week volunteering experience as student tutors in primary and secondary schools throughout Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire.

This year there was a strong local response to the BP Student Tutoring Scheme with over 100 schools within Aberdeen City and Shire requesting student tutors.  A total of 87 students from the three institutions took part in the Scheme – 46 students from Robert Gordon University, 21 students from the University of Aberdeen and 20 from Aberdeen College.

The initiative has received positive feedback, with the schools reporting they have benefited greatly from the enthusiasm and energy with which the students approached the project.
