Referencing

Library+ staff have put together an online, quick guide to Referencing using the Harvard system. This is available to all students and staff through Blackboard.

Just login to Blackboard and look for Referencing listed under My Courses.

Printed guides to referencing are available free from all Library+ sites or you can download one from the right hand side of this page.

What is Referencing?

Whenever you refer to other people’s opinions, ideas, pictures, statistics or anything else, in your own work you must acknowledge where the information came from. This acknowledgement is a reference.

Why do I need to Reference?

There are several reasons.

  • To show that you have read about the topic you are writing about. This demonstrates the work you have put in.
  • To show what you read.
  • To enable the person reading your work to look up the sources you have used.
  • To acknowledge the work of others and so avoid Plagiarism.

If you need help, just ask Library+ staff or download the Guide to Referencing.
