Student Awards

WorldSkills UK 2008

Balloonatic won the ‘Popular Music’ category of the Scottish/Irish heat. Band members, HNC/D Music students David Scott, Scott Ross and Ross Cunningham and Keith Rainnie performed covers by the Prodigy and the Beastie Boys.

Michael Allan, HNC Hospitality, won the Scottish heat of the ‘Restaurant Service Intermediate’ category and went on to win bronze at the UK final.

Adult Learners’ Week Awards

The College’s ADA Art Group based in Inverurie won the Group category for the STV North area for the difference the Group has made to the lives of the participants. In the ‘Individual’ category for the STV North area, Lisa Johnston was presented with the award in recognition for overcoming personal barriers to achieve a PDA Learning Assistant qualification.

SQA Star Awards 2007

Shelley Anderson, HNC Music, was highly commended in the ‘Candidate of the Year Award’ for her work in the local community. Shelley organised and performed in a charity music event and offered musical tuition to young homeless people alongside studying at the College.

Hospitality Industry Trust (Scotland) Scholarships

Kelly Greenhowe, HNC Professional Cookery, received a scholarship to attend a one week craft course for trainee chefs.
Karen Wilson, HNC Hospitality, was awarded a scholarship to work with the Scottish Culinary Team Chef, Willie Pike.

Scottish Plant Owners Association

Mark Kearney, SVQ Plant Maintenance, was named as the Best Apprentice for North Scotland.

Dulux Apprentice of the Year

Debbie Greig, CITB Construction: Painting and Decorating, won the Scottish heat of the competition and finished fourth in the national final.

Orange

Jody Armstrong, HND Music, came second in this national music performance competition She was selected to represent the Northern region and was given the opportunity to record at ’RAK’, one of London’s top recording studios. Jody also performed for an audience of 6,000 at Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre as a warm-up act for the singer Shane Ward after the artist heard her competition entry.

Scottish Association of Timber Trade Teachers National Craft Competition

Sam Cosford, SVQ Construction: Carpentry and Joinery, came second in the competition and received a selection of hand and power tools.

Grampian Chef of the Year

Orry Shand, HNC Professional Cookery, received gold while Neil Hudson, SVQ 2 Day Release, was awarded silver.

Royal Northern Agricultural Society Apprenticeship Award
Mervyn Carre, SVQ Service Engineering, won the ‘Agricultural Engineer’ category.

Scottish Institute of Road Transport Engineers Competition

SVQ Heavy Vehicle Mechanics Level 3 students Kris Duncan and William Hay achieved third and fourth places in the competition.

Student of the Year Award and the William Daniel Award

Callum Smart, Advance Carpentry and Joinery, won both awards sponsored by Wrights and Coopers.

Art and Design Diploma Show 2008

The end of year show was held in June 2008 to showcase the work of final year students. The following was awarded as Best Work on the Wall for:

  • Art and Design - Hannah Beresford, HND Art and Design
  • Textiles - Heather Grant, HND Stitched Textiles and Fashion Design
  • New Media - David Weir-McCall, HND Visual Communication
  • Graphics - Shelagh Addison, HND Visual Communication
  • Photography - Seila Susberg, HND Professional Photography and Imaging
  • Halcon Student Achievement Award - Marie Paterson, HND Professional Photography and Imaging.
ePHOTOzine Competition

Barbara Wright, HND Professional Photography and Imaging, received a merit prize of £50 for her entry which captured the phrase “Tea is brilliant”. The competition was run in conjunction with Tetley Tea and Nikon.

BAA Scholarship

Carrie Kerr, HND Travel and Tourism was awarded a £500 scholarship by BAA. The scholarship included work experience and mentoring with BAA at Aberdeen Airport.

The Grampian PR Group Award

James Callander, HND Communication with Media, received this award for maintaining a very high standard of work throughout his second year of the course and for demonstrating a strong commitment to his studies.

Hair and Beauty Festival

Over 350 hairdressing and beauty therapy trainees and students took part in the fourth annual competition, which is organised by the College’s Hairdressing and Beauty Team. Aberdeen College students were successful in the following categories:

  • First Time Freestyle: 1st – Jackie Passel, 3rd – Danielle Laing
  • Men’s Commercial Style: 2nd – Stephanie McGougan
  • Ladies Commercial Cut and Blow Dry: 2nd – Jason Ashcroft, 3rd – Noreen Robb
  • High Fashion: 1st – Louise Ross
  • Ladies Evening Style: 2nd – Harri Garrick, 3rd – Rachael Reid
  • Afro-Caribbean: 1st – Edith Robertson
  • Fantasy Make-up: 2nd - Shelley Milne
  • Manicure: 1st – Santana Romain
